The Mid Puget
Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group

is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization that works with communities to maximize self-sustaining salmon populations. In King and Eastern Kitsap Counties, we work cooperatively with private landowners, agencies, tribes and others to identify, design and implement projects that improve salmon habitat.

Barker Creek
Silverdale, WA

Located at the estuary of Barker Creek, at Tracyton Blvd near Dyes Inlet, this major project entails the replacement of a 90-foot long, 5-foot diameter culvert with a 73-foot long, 36-foot wide, arched bottemless culvert.

The existing culvert is the final passage barrier for fish on this important salmon-bearing stream. Its removal will open the stream for Coho, Chum and Chinook, Steelhead and Cutthroat. As opposed to a culvert pipe, the planned arch will not only allow for the stream to keep its natural bed, but will also absorb tidal fluctuation.

Supported by the Washington State Salmon Recovery Funding Board's 2003 grant cycle with $ 417,000 and $ 83,000 in matching contributions, this project had to be rescheduled and is currently under construction.  The project is funded by a $417,000 grant from the Washington State Salmon Recovery Funding Board and $83,000 in matching contributions.
