SUMMARY:8/1/2026 Salmon Habitat Restoration & intro to birding along the Sammamish River in Woodinville
DESCRIPTION:Click here to sign up!\nJoin Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group at our Sammamish River restoration site for a fun day of birding and habitat restoration! \nMid Sound staff will lead a nature walk throughout the site for first half of the event where we will learn about the diversity of bird species that use our restoration site. We will stop at unique habitat features – including standing dead trees (snags)\, tall conifers\, and creek mouths – throughout the site that provide homes to birds ranging from woodpeckers to hummingbirds to owls and waterfowl! We will spend the second half of the event engaged in hands-on restoration work! \nAfter signing up you will receive a confirmation email from Idealist. You will receive another email on July 29th (Wednesday before the event) with more detailed event information (parking\, event location\, packing list\, etc.). \nFor participants under 18: if you plan to volunteer without your parent/ guardian and this is your first time volunteering with Mid Sound Fisheries\, you need to print and have your parent sign 2 waivers. \nYouth waivers are available on Mid Sound’s website here: https://www.midsoundfisheries.org/west-sammamish-river-trail-revegetation/ \nPlease review the below information before attending the event:\nEvent Location: Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group Volunteer Restoration \nNearest Street Address: 15100 Woodinville Redmond Rd NE\, Woodinville\, WA 98072 \nParking: 15000 Woodinville Redmond Rd NE #800 \nPlease park in the Soulteach Ultrasound parking lot\, located inside the large business complex next to the restoration site.  Click here to see a map of how to get from the parking lot to the restoration site. \nOur events run rain or shine\, but in the event of hazardous weather like severe wind\, cold\, heat or smoke the Mid Sound staff member leading your event will be in contact via email the morning to officially cancel the event. Plan to check your email the morning of your event so you are aware of any updates. \nNative Land: \nWe acknowledge that this work takes place on the occupied\, traditional land of the Coast Salish People who have cared for this land since time immemorial. We recognize that we are not the first stewards of this land and water\, and are contributing to the important legacy of this work. \nTo find out more about Native Land\, check out this interactive map: https://native-land.ca/ \nHow Your Volunteer Service Helps Salmon and Their Ecosystems: \nPuget Sound salmon are in trouble. Two populations of salmonid species in the Sammamish River (Chinook and Steelhead) are listed on the federal Endangered Species Act\, meaning their population numbers are so low that they are at risk of extinction without urgent action. A key problem for Sammamish River salmon is high water temperatures. Planting native trees and shrubs along the banks of the river creates canopy cover and shade\, cooling water temperatures. To be able to plant trees we must first remove invasive plants that can outcompete with younger native trees. Thriving forests and shorelines provide many benefits to our communities as well\, like filtering pollution\, mitigating erosion and storm damage\, and providing places for wildlife to live and for us to connect with nature. \nWhat to Expect: \nWhen you arrive\, we will have you (or your parent/guardian) sign in and then gather for an introduction circle. Once we are on the same page with safety and protocols for the day\, we will spend time on various restoration tasks that change with the seasons. During fall and winter events we remove invasive species\, plant native trees and shrubs\, and spread mulch\, which helps maintain moisture around native plants and reduces the opportunity for invasive plants to regrow. During late Spring and Summer we do maintenance weed removal in sections of the site that were recently planted. The invasive weed removal is similar to weeding a vegetable garden\, as weeds are removed we protect young native plants and will create space to add more plants in the future. For all of these tasks volunteers will use tools provided by Mid Sound\, including shovels\, rakes\, tarps\, hand snippers\, and more. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nLayers of clothing that can get dirty\, that will keep you warm\, and will keep you dry\n\nLong sleeves and thick pants to protect against thorny plants and weather (shorts not recommended)\nJacket\nHat\nRain Jacket/ Rain Pants\n\n\nClosed-toe shoes are required! (ex: rain boots and hiking boots. No sandals\, heels\, or flats)\nA reusable water bottle\n\nWhat we will Provided: \n\nWater and light snacks will be provided\, please bring extra snacks or a lunch if needed\nElectrolytes and sunscreen (Summer events)\nWork gloves\nAll necessary tools and equipment\nFirst-Aid Kit\n\nYouth: \nYoung people under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Any minors under the age of 18 attending the event without a parent or legal guardian must also bring a printed copy of their signed Mid Sound Youth Waiver and the King County Parks Youth Waiver to the event in order to participate. \nBathrooms: Bike Pump & Bathrooms (14580 NE 145th St\, Woodinville\, WA 98072) \nThe nearest public restrooms are located at the North Shore Athletic Fields\, about a 15 minute walk or a 5 minute drive from the restoration site. There are 2 porta-potties at the parking lot\, and a facility with running water just a 1 minute walk north on the paved trail.
