We have over 1\,000 livestakes ready to get in the groud! Species include Stika Willow\, Red Osier Dogwood\, and Douglas Spirea. \nLivestakes are clippings taken from mature native plants\, usually 3 to 5 feet long. After harvesting\, clippings are steaked into the ground where they can grow into an entirely new plant. Not all plant species can be propagated using livestakes\, but this is a common planting technique for willows and other shoreline plants. \nMost of our event time will be dedicated to planting these livestakes\, and any remaining time will be spent clearing invasive Himalayan Blackberry from the river’s shoreline. \nUpon signing up you will receive a confirmation email from VolunteerMatch. DESCRIPTION:Join Mid Sound Fisheries\, the City of Auburn\, and your community members as we continue Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy of service by restoring the shores of the Green-Duwamish River at Fenster Park! We will be removing invasive blackberry and planting native trees and shrubs. Trees are beneficial to us because they provide oxygen and forests for us to spend time in\, but trees also help keep rivers clean\, clear\, and cold- all qualities that salmon need to be healthy. We will send an email containing more details before the event. Sign up on Volunteer Match by clicking on this link: https://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp3877923.jsp \nThe event will begin with a brief discussion that includes information about the site\, the partnering organizations\, why this work is important\, tool use\, and safety. We will provide work gloves\, all instructions\, and all tools. Please plan to arrive on time for the start of the event and allow extra time to find parking. Everyone is welcome\, but anyone under 18 needs to fill out and bring to the event the attached Youth Waiver. Thank you! \nCovid-19 Safety Protocol: Before arriving at the event please check your temperature. If it is above 100.4 degrees please stay home. Bear Creek and Monticello Creek flow through this small forest\, and their confluence is on site. Confluences are very important areas where waterways meet. For salmon\, they provide access to spawning grounds and are sources of cold water they need. \nMid Sound helped to replanted the understory of this riparian forest in the winter of 2025\, and now we need help clearing invasive weeds like Himalayan Blackberry to support the establishment of these new native plants. \nUpon signing up you will receive a confirmation email. DESCRIPTION:Click here to sign up!\nJoin Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group on the King County Parks-owned Middle Bear Creek Natural Area to restore salmon habitat! Come learn about the vibrant riparian ecosystems in our urban backyard! \nWe will spend the day clearing invasive weeds\, such as Himalayan Blackberry\, from the creek shoreline and forest understory to create a healthy riparian habitat. Bear Creek and Monticello Creek flow through this small forest\, and their confluence is on site. Confluences are very important areas where waterways meet. For salmon\, they provide access to spawning grounds and are sources of cold water they need. \nMid Sound helped to replanted the understory of this riparian forest in the winter of 2025\, and now we need help clearing invasive weeds like Himalayan Blackberry to support the establishment of these new native plants. \nUpon signing up you will receive a confirmation email. DESCRIPTION:*Click Here To Register* \nJoin Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group\, in partnership with the City of Kenmore\, Confluence Environmental Company\, and Sno-King Watershed Council\, for habitat restoration at ƛ̕ax̌ʷadis Park on Saturday\, June 14\, 2025 from 11 AM to 2 PM. \nJoin Mid Sound and partners on a field trip to the recently restored part of ƛ̕ax̌ʷadis Park. This is a special opportunity to experience part of the park that is normally off-limits to human visitors. We’ll get down off the boardwalk to clear invasive plants away from native plants so they aren’t crowded out! \nThe event will begin with a brief discussion that includes information about the site\, the partnering organizations\, why this work is important\, tool use\, and safety. We will provide work gloves\, all instructions\, and all tools. Please plan to arrive on time for the start of the event and allow extra time to find parking. \nEveryone is welcome\, but anyone 16 or 17 years old attending without an adult needs to fill out and bring the attached Youth Waiver to the event. Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by an adult. Thank you! \n\nCovid-19 Safety Protocol: \n\nBefore arriving at the event please check your temperature. This section of the site was planted last fall and winter and already\, Himalayan Blackberry and other non-native noxious weeds are creeping back and covering new native plantings. Our work will include digging out weeds and adding landscaping cardboard and mulch to prevent any regrowth. We may also install protective grow tubes around native plants to prevent grazing by wildlife like deer. Maintenance is a really important task during the summer season and we appreciate the help volunteers like you bring! \nUpon signing up you will receive a confirmation email. SUMMARY:11/08/2025 Tree Planting and Habitat Restoration at Burns Creek
DESCRIPTION:Join Mid Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group for a day of Chinook salmon habitat restoration! We will spend the day removing invasive plants and planting native trees and shrubs on a King County-owned site on Burns Creek\, a tributary to the Green River which hosts a high number of juvenile Chinook salmon as they grow and prepare to begin their lives in the ocean. \nVolunteers should expect to be primarily digging blackberry roots at this event\, but everyone will have the opportunity to get a few native plants in the ground! We will provide instructions\, a safety talk\, work gloves\, and all tools\, as well as snacks\, water\, and electrolytes. Please plan to arrive on time for the start of the event as we will be shuttling from our meeting location at Metzler Park to the work site. \nEveryone is welcome\, but anyone under 18 years old attending without an adult needs to fill out a Youth Waiver to the event (This will be linked in the confirmation email after you apply to the event). Two populations of salmonid species in the Sammamish River (Chinook and Steelhead) are listed as threatened under the federal Endangered Species Act. A key problem for Sammamish River salmon is high water temperatures. Planting native trees and shrubs along the banks of the river creates canopy cover and shade\, cooling water temperatures. To be able to plant trees we must first remove invasive plants that can outcompete newly planted native trees. Thriving forests and shorelines provide many benefits to our communities as well\, like filtering pollution\, mitigating erosion and storm damage\, and providing places for wildlife to live and for us to connect with nature. \nWhat to Expect: \nWhen you arrive\, we will have you (or your parent/guardian) sign in and then gather for an introduction circle. Once we are on the same page with safety and protocols for the day\, we will spend time on various restoration tasks that change with the seasons. During fall and winter events we remove invasive species\, plant native trees and shrubs\, and spread mulch\, which helps maintain moisture around native plants and reduces the opportunity for invasive plants to regrow. During late Spring and Summer we do maintenance weed removal in sections of the site that were recently planted. The invasive weed removal is similar to weeding a vegetable garden\, as weeds are removed we protect young native plants and will create space to add more plants in the future. For all of these tasks volunteers will use tools provided by Mid Sound\, including shovels\, rakes\, tarps\, hand snippers\, and more. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nLayers of clothing that can get dirty\, that will keep you warm\, and will keep you dry\n\nLong sleeves and thick pants to protect against thorny plants and weather (shorts not recommended)\nJacket\nHat\nRain Jacket/ Rain Pants\n\n\nClosed-toe shoes are required! (ex: rain boots and hiking boots.
